Obituary

Mamie Lee (Piper) Dodds, 99, of Big Spring died Friday, October 26, 2018. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with Derrell Patterson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park. Mamie was born on July 21, 1919 in Bertram, Texas to James C. and Myrtle A. (Sims) Piper. After her father’s death in 1921, she and her siblings were sent to the Methodist Children’s Home in Waco, Texas. In 1935, she left the Home and came to live in Big Spring with her mother and step-father, A.E. “Preach” True. She graduated from Big Spring High School in 1937 and got her bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech in 1954. She taught for over 30 years in the Big Spring ISD. Mamie Lee was very involved in community service. She ran the July 4th “Let Freedom Ring” program for over 40 years, and also worked for the Big Spring Tourist Information Center and held many other positions on city and county committees and programs. She was named the Big Spring Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1993. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Mamie is preceded in death by her son: Arthur D. Dodds, III of Big Spring; and her daughter: Archie V. (Biddie) Haynes of Sumter, SC; her brothers: Doyce Piper of Big Spring, J. R. “Dick” Piper of Big Spring, and Brady Piper of Bowie, MD; and one sister: Claudius Merle Petherbridge of Big Spring. Mamie is survived by her grandchildren: Michael Dennis Dodds and his wife Holly, Kerry Martin, all of Greenville, TX and Ronald Haynes and his wife Janet, Danita Atkinson, Darla Greenwald and her husband Robert all of Sumter, SC and Debra Miller and husband John of Pittsburgh, PA; thirteen great grandchildren and nineteen great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces: Henrietta Carson, Lucy Piper, Jo Anna Bailey, and Jackie Piper, all of Big Spring, and several other nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Methodist Children’s Home, 1111 Herring Ave., Waco, Texas 76708 or First United Methodist Church, 400 Main Street, Big Spring Texas 79720.
